Crisis Management

How would you react if a film crew arrived on your doorstep at 6am, asking you to comment on a crisis in your company? What you do in those few seconds can affect the reputation of your company, and your position within it. These days, every business continuity plan needs to include crisis media training.

One of our specialities is helping companies deal with bad news. Although many organisations now have a procedures to recover from a disaster, the media impact is often overlooked. However, it is highly likely that if a crisis occurs, your company's media profile will be raised dramatically, and your future success will depend on how you deal with reporters.

We help you prepare for the media frenzy that could occur. Our training programmes ensure that your spokespeople are equipped with skills and techniques to minimise the impact on your reputation.

Here are the key things you should do if a crisis occurs -

  • Recognise that you have a crisis
  • Prepare for senior staff being doorstepped and ambushed by reporters

  • Be seen and heard doing the right things

  • The media must not be ignored during a crisis. TV is the most important medium

  • Set up a communication process with the media as quickly as possible

  • The most senior staff must take charge and be seen as company spokespeople

  • Talk about people first, property second, and money third.

  •  Focus on your feelings about the situation, and how it will be prevented from  happening again

  •  Become the single most authoritative source of information about the crisis

  •   It is possible to ignore certain hostile journalists, though it may backfire to do so

  •  Keep a close eye on media coverage, and take every opportunity to correct inaccurate reporting

However, knowing what  to do is not the same as being prepared. Practice is crucial.

A one-day course for up to 8 staff costs £2,000 plus VAT. A two-day course is £3,000 plus VAT.

What might be the cost  to you or your company's reputation  if you weren't prepared?

But it doesn't end there. No-one knows if and when a crisis may occur, and it may be months or even years since your training. We supply you with a 24-hour hotline that you can call any day of the year. We will arrange for an experienced journalist to call you back and coach you through the likely interviews to come.

This unique service, called "Just-in-time coaching", is available to all of our clients for a small retainer or a one-off fee. Email us for more details.
